Transport Canada is committed to maintaining the safety and security of maritime transportation - for operators and passengers of small commercial vessels, large commercial vessels and pleasure craft. We also have a role in some aspects of Canada's marine security, marine infrastructure and the transport of dangerous goods.

 

The Canadian shipbuilding and ship repair industry is a technology based and specialized skills oriented field using the products of numerous Canadian companies from steel mills to advanced information technology.

 

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation , an organization that manages and operates the 13 Canadian locks of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Since 1959, when the Seaway was opened for deep draft navigation, more than two billion tons of cargo estimated at $300 billion dollars have moved to and from Canada, the United States, and nearly fifty other nations.


 

CADSI is the voice of Canada’s defence and security industries. Our business association represents over 500 member companies who are essential contributors to Canada’s national defence and security and generate billions of dollars to the Canadian economy every year. Upper Lakes Group Inc. is one of Canada’s largest shipping companies. Privately owned and in operation since 1932, its head office is located in Toronto with several other offices across Canada. The company owns 16 large bulk carriers on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River, which are operated and marketed through Seaway Marine Transport, a partnership of Upper Lakes Group and Algoma Central Marine. The company also owns two grain elevators, two grain trading companies, a fuelling company and several ship repair and industrial companies. Upper Lakes is a partner in McAsphalt Marine Transportation Ltd., a venture which owns and operates tug barge units engaged in the transportation of asphalt and heavy residual fuels.
